PUBLISHER'S COLUMN

"I'm just as pissed off now as I was in the beginning.
What I saw was worse than I imagined.
"Why the f*** can't we just give food to non-governmental
organisations to help these people who are in desperate need?
I'm a citizen of Europe. The EU has my money and I want the
people in power to put my money where it is needed and stop
these tragic events happening in Africa. These politicians
have been warned and won't be able to make excuses in the
coming months."

My only curiousity about this election coming up in
2004 here in the states is whether voter turnout will
see a tiny uptic or its current usual "downtic."

Depending upon who you talk to, turnout in the 2000
election was 51% or it was 49%. (I might as well
borrow a little temporary credibility and formally
announce it was 47% with an error coefficient of
4, eh?)

Let's start with both.

Will 50% or 48% turn out in 2004?

Or will 52 and 50?

My "money" is on the "downtic."

It's been doing that on almost a straight line
since Nixxon.

Funniest thing is MTV/GE/RadioShityMuzakHall has been
abusing a 501c3 for their "snooze and lose" campaign
and spending god knows how many hundreds of millions
of US Gov't taxdollars to "attempt" at getting more
voter turnout from the ages 18-25. Does anyone want
to take a stab at what their impact has been?

Almost 0.00 % !!!

No impact whatsoever. If anything it's been slowing
down the 1% downtick each cycle since Nixxon. Perhaps
it would have been 2, or 3, or 23. But we can't know.
Fact of the matter is about 1/3 of people aged 18-29
voted in the last election. About 1/3 voted in the
one before that, and about 1/3 voted in the one
before that one. Take it all the way back to 1972
when the voting age came down to 18, and how many
voted then? You guessed it, about a third.

Face it, young people aren't saying "Carter, Clinton,
or Lieberman." They're not saying "Third Party," or
even "Bush," "Hitler," or "Sharon."

THEY'RE SAYING FUCK THEM ALL. EACH AND EVERY ONE.

They're saying this system is not useful OR helpful.
Most of them don't want anything out of it and they're
damned well not going to put something into it.

It certainly didn't turn this sinking ship around.
Twenty three frigging years, it's been a "snooze or
lose" charade, sponsored by GE (we bring good things
to life.)

They're no better than Disney. Wait, they ARE Disney
aren't they?

Might as well be.

OK, enough rant.

Clan Dyken To Play Locally June 8

"Friday May 30 a Big Mountain Benefit at Seamans Lodge
in Nevada City with Kimberly Bass, Bodhi Busik and Aro
Veno. Dinner at 6:00 show starts at 7pm. There will also
be a silent auction of great art and other locally donated
items.

"We are working on planting some food in a few places on
the Reservation in Arizona for harvest this fall for the
food run. The money raised at this show will either go
into seed or water systems. The plan is to help area
farmers grow enough food to sell us this fall when we
return for Thanksgiving."

If you've never heard or seen Clandyken, that should
give you some idea what they're about.

And here's a chance to see them free in a cozy setting.
No, it'll be MUCH cozier than the Pabst! And free, wow.

http://www.clandyken.com/Band_Over/band_over.htm

Here's a lyric:

 i am
 i am building
 building a house
 it's a house of song
 to house my children
give them rooms to be in
 food from the kitchen
 feed my children

And from the Clandyken newsletter:

Sunday June 8 Clan Dyken will play an acoustic house concert
at the Activist House in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The house is
located at 1149 N 21st street (between Juneau and Highland).

We'll get started around 7 pm

Marc Frucht, the editor and Anarchist Prime behind the ATI-ezine
(look for the link on our web site) has arranged for us to play
in the Brew City while we are visiting the homeland to play for
the wedding of a cousin. Marc is a great writer and musician as
well as a dedicated activist. Check out his stories concerning
the recent beating he suffered at the hands (clubs) of the
Washington DC Police for taking pictures of them in action
at a demonstration in our Capital.

http://flag.blackened.net/ati/zine/infomaniack.html

I suggest you subscribe to his e zine, it's some of my
favorite e-mail, I look forward to reading every issue.

So get to 21st street June 8th around 7pm.
If they play "On The Way To Big Mountain" from their
newest CD "Love Is" your feet will just start dancing
on their own.

"After all we're all the children of the same mother."

RANT - by Jasmine

Rage... building! Must... post... rant!

28th May 2003

I am getting a bit fed up of my opinion counting for nothing.
Nobody is listening to me when I say that I don't want the
'great reforms' they're forcing on me; I want entirely different
ones. I understand that the job the politicos are doing is difficult
and involves a complex balancing act, but they're really balancing
the 'snide' force against the 'pocketlining instinct' and not
leaving anything for me and mine.

I can't be the only one who feels this way- hell, I look at any
editorial, whether it be New Scientist or Private Eye, the Sun
or the Guardian, the South Wales Evening Post or the Daily Mail,
and I see unhappy people saying that they don't like what Blair,
Bush's fat controllers, Sharon, Arafat, and all those other over
privileged children are doing to us.

All we want is a fair try, but can we get represented? No.
I'm beginning to worry that nine tenths of the people on
this planet are in fact cleverly constructed robots or golems
or the fusion of human and sheep DNA. I talk to people and they
don't seem to have ever worried about it, they've never thought
that the government was ripping them off, and they never thought
about how much better it could be, if only there existed a policy
of responsibility.

This is what comes of basing a system of government on a
popularity contest. And, no, I don't have any much better
ideas- well, I have a couple, but they're not that much
better. I don't have any idea how to eliminate the problems
caused by people who just don't care. I read an article a
few days ago about the theory that psychopathy isn't a
disorder at all, in an evolutionary sense, because
psychopaths are supremely functional at the expense
of others- they get to spread their genes quite
successfully thank you.

This is the class of people we have allowed into our
government, simply because without a cult of personality,
and without magnetic leadership it's impossible to become
a winner in the election popularity contest.
